I have been looking at the ways Alfred Hitchcock created suspense, as he was known as the 'Master of Suspense'.
Hitchcock created suspense in a variety of ways. For example, in some of his films, he showed the viewer what danger there was at the beginning of the scene, and then, making sure the character does not see the danger, lets the scene play out as normal. Creating suspense for the viewer as they know about the incoming danger and the character does not. I believe we should do this in the our opening scene of a Thriller as this seems a very effective technique to create suspense. An example of this is in this clip:-
